The complainant — Luz Portillo, according to the Mercury News — alleged that Hector Perla had engaged in nonconsensual sexual relations with her in June 2015. Portillo alleged that Perla took her to a wine tasting and that they proceeded to consume at least four bottles of wine that evening. Portillo told investigators that she had been completely intoxicated and that she could not have consented to a sexual relationship with the professor or anyone else. She filed a report with the Santa Cruz Police Department the next day. Perla admitted to having sexual relations with Portillo but said the acts were consensual. The report found, however, that the sexual relations were more likely than not nonconsensual. Perla later resigned.
